I’m in New York City, on a tight budget, and I don’t want to pay more than I should have to.
Second option:
If it happens to be an easy repair to do yourself, could you describe to me how I would go about doing it?
It all really depends you can contact your local dealer and ask, Hope this helped!

Depends on cost of replacement part. A good rebuild shop could supply one for around $100-150. Some discount parts store may get that down to under $100. Remember, you get what you pay for. Changing one out is really easy on 240. Just disconnect the battery and go for it. Minor tools will be needed, 12mm,13mm and 8mm sockets or wrenches will do it. The alternator is mounted on rubber ,so the rubber mounts may need attention. The ground wire attaching alt to block is critical to alt operation, make sure it’s good. Basically it’s two bolts and 3 wires and very obvious what goes where.Takes 30-45 minutes on average.

Take it to a shop, not a Volvo dealer though,
a shop you trust.
I’ve had plenty of generators, alternators and starters rebuilt at $90.
Good luck

You may just need to replace the voltage regulator in the back of the alternator. You can do it without even removing the alternator. Two screws and it comes right out. Make sure you get a bosch brand regulator. If the old one is bad the two brushes will be completely worn down. It can be a little hard to put the new one back in as you have to press against a spring while aligning the screws. Also make sure the engine is cold when you (or someone) does the job. Here is what it looks like and the cost.

Go to http://www.autozone.com and tell them what kind of car you have. The DIY section should have instructions with diagrams.
I have a ’92 – this is an easy job you can do in fifteen minutes with just a wrench or socket set.
